I just set up a quick scene, but I'm open for anything! As the sun began to set, a chill rattled deep in Gladys' bones. In the distance she could see the faint glow of a fire, likely from some raider camp, and she made a mental note to check out that area tomorrow in the early morning light. She had spent the better part of two days working odd jobs, just having finished clearing out small group of super mutants who had been terrorizing some farmers outside Diamond City. They couldn’t afford to pay in caps, so she accepted their meager offer of some meat and vegetables instead. The Commonwealth in winter was particularly brutal, and rather than hole up in some abandoned, war-torn building, Gladys decided to spend her caps on a bed in Diamond City. It was dark by the time she reached the entrance to Fenway Park, and she gave a nod to the guards as she passed. Once inside, she paid little mind to the chatter of passers-by and took a seat at Power Noodles, pulling the bandana away from her face. “Hey, Takahashi,” she greeted the robot, smiling warmly despite his one-and-only response: "Nan-ni shimasu-ka?" He handed her a warm bowl of soup and eagerly, Gladys slurped up the food. She was halfway through her dish when she spotted a man quarreling with one of the merchants. They were too far away for her to hear exactly what the disagreement was about, but the man, red-faced in his anger, roughly shoved the trader. Instinctively, Gladys gripped the pistol at her side, but before she made a move to intervene, one of the Diamond City guards stepped in to subdue him. Quietly, Gladys chided herself for almost getting involved in an issue that meant little in the grand scheme of things. Maybe she had some kind of death wish; she apparently wasn’t satisfied unless she was in a hail of gunfire, or being chased by something big and mutated. Briefly, she remembered something an old psychiatrist had told her - the one time she chose to see one: “People deal with grief in different ways.” Yeah, he was a quack. Thanking Takahashi, Gladys pulled away from the shop’s counter and started making her way to the Dugout Inn, caps jingling in her clasped hand.

He wrapped himself tighter in his coat, folding his hands under his armpits to warm his fingers; worse than the heat, he grimaced to himself, reminded of the days when the Mojave would breach dangerous temperatures without a care in the world. He preferred to stay indoor those days, as he would have liked to huddle next to an oil-fed lamp in order to warm himself now. But he had run out of caps in his journey, as he traversed half the country in order to find himself here—it took a long time to reach the Commonwealth, and he was not sure if he would ever find himself back home, where he belonged. As much as a wastelander could have a home, anyway. His eyes lazily followed a kerfuffle which happened between the locals, and instinctually he found his hand at the ready on his hip; would he have drawn his pistol, in an effort to intercede—on whatever issue, he did not even know, he could not have guessed which side to have joined. But this inner turmoil caused him to look more closely, at the woman who had chosen to do the same. This piqued his interest, and he sailed off after her quietly as she pushed herself away from the noodle bar. He chose to follow her rather closely, but in the city she may have trouble discerning that he was tailing her; he could hear the caps in her hands, and he smirked, maybe he’d be able to score some of that for an odd job, or maybe she’d just offload them out of the goodness of her feminine heart—that’s how ladies work, right? He bumped into a random local, who spat at him angrily and gave a half-hearted, “Ah, piss off”—“Hey, yeah--no, buddy, you walked into me!” Nellis said sharply, wearing a withering scowl on his face. He looked forward again, hoping a few things—that the woman would not be looking at him, or that he hadn’t lost her around a corner.

One, as usual, was his hire, trying to finish a deal. Ronnie was the guy's name and Cassius was starting to think he would have had better luck talking himself. He hated talked to clients, always stumbling over his own words in an attempt to sound more coherent. The hole in his face made it more trouble than it was worth. It was easy enough to spend a cap or two on some nobody who could at least remember the words Cassius told him. In this case Ronnie was haggling for a better deal for Cassius, the contract was a mole rat infestation, easy enough, but he'd ended up fighting through raiders squatting in the floor above just to get to their nest. Down below the conversation was becoming a scene and the client was screaming at Ronnie. Soon enough the guards intervened and brought the red faced man roughly to the ground. Cassius climbed down to the ground and headed for the Dugout. He'd agreed to meet Ronnie there and even if he'd botched the deal he still earned the caps. A breeze swept down the alley and Cassius instinctively pulled up his scarf, keeping the worst of the cold off his exposed teeth. He entered the Dugout after a small crowd and took a seat at the bar. Now all he had to do was wait for Ronnie.

She glanced over her shoulder and spotted a kid – he couldn’t be any older than 20 – following her a little too close for comfort. Rather than become irrationally paranoid, she decided to take an alternate, less direct route to see if he was really tailing her. Eventually, she rounded a corner and waited for him, and sure enough, he showed. She shoved the caps into one of her pockets and reached out to try and grab him by the front of his jacket, her eyes narrowing on him. “Are you following me?” Gladys barked at him, scowling, and her grip on his coat would tighten if he didn’t jump out of her reach. “Listen kid, if you think you’re going to jump me in this alley, you’re sadly mistaken.” The threat was thinly veiled and she eyed him for a moment, taking in his appearance – scarred skin, a ratty duster and old, obviously scavenged armor – and decided he wasn’t a threat. If she had managed to keep him in her grip, Gladys would let go of him now and turn away. “Whatever it is you want, run it by me in the Dugout Inn, I need a drink.” Gladys continued on her way, stepping into the dimly lit tavern. Shoving past the throng of people near the bar, she grabbed the only unoccupied seat. She motioned towards the bartender and waited, glancing over at the man seated next to her. He had quite the gruesome wound on his face, but she tried not to gawk, and instead offered to clink bottles with him: “To warmer days, yeah?”

He offered an impassive, blank stare in response to her accusations and threatening look, his heart beating slightly faster withal the excitement that ran through him. “Uh, sorry miss,” he sputtered, as he did not exactly mean to come off as a creepy stalker. He wanted to say, Well, I saw you by that noodle place, and frankly I think the same thing ran through our heads—you see, I think we could be just fine friends, and I don’t really have friends so I’d like that.” The young man remained silent, his face expressionless for the most part, eyes searching for any modicum of interest on her face. He wanted to speak, but turned away, and let her leave him in the street. “Great,” he sighed, and she left. Well, he couldn’t just leave it like that! He offered her some time to get settled in this ‘Dugout Inn’, and followed after her, met by a crowd of people. He could see her at the bar, but he was suddenly too nervous to approach. Ah, well, he’d see what he could learn by keeping his distance, anyhow.

He made sure to cock his head to one side as he swallowed, holding a hand to where his cheek should be. Ronnie should have been here by now, it's not like the kid got lost in his home town. Cassius lowered his pack to the floor with a heavy thud by the base of his stool. If the kid wasn't coming for his caps then something had definitely gone wrong. He rested his hand on his back briefly to brush his hand over the handle of his knife. He took a lazy look around the room and spotted another man looking his way. Either that or he was looking at the girl. Just behind this fellow there was a looming figure by the entrance and he was definitely staring at Cassius. This man had a hand on his hip, hovering his fingers over a pistol shoved through his belt. Cassius thought of his own gun, an unwieldy old rifle wrapped under too many layers of hide to get quickly enough. Casually, he planted both feet on the stool and pushed forward, careening over and behind the bar, dragging the heavy pack along in his path. He landed in a heap n the other side, but the pack only made it as far as the bar top before sliding to a stop barely out of reach. Although he looked like a fool he figured he was better safe than sorry. Especially after a deal gone sour.

All at once, the tranquility of the evening was ruined, and Gladys looked behind her to see what had spooked him. The bartender was too occupied trying to strong-arm him out from behind the bar – “Woah buddy, what the fuck? You can’t be back here.” – to notice the shifty-looking fellow with his hand on the holster of his gun. Nearby was the kid from earlier who Gladys was pretty sure was following her, and she called out to him before the hail of gunfire started: "Watch out, kid!" She shouted, and she grabbed the heavy bag off the bar counter before throwing herself over the other side. This dude definitely had some sort of score to settle with the guy with the fucked up face, and Gladys glared at him from behind the bar where they both took shelter. As expected, the guy started shooting towards the bar and all hell broke lose. People were running and shoving each other down in their haste to get out of the Dugout Inn. "Really? And here I thought I was going to have a relaxing evening," Gladys said aloud, but she knew damn well that wasn't true. Throwing the bag at the guy next to her, she reached for her own handgun and tried to aim for the assailant. But with all the people in the room causing a commotion, she couldn't get a good shot in. Well, fuck.

Classic pandemonium began to unfurl before him, just as any Tuesday night in the Mojave would, and the tensions were set ablaze. As for being called ‘kid’, which was a new one for him, he would just have to assume she meant it in the ‘cowboy’ sense. Here we go, he thought. Things were moving quickly now, panic was beginning to set in; city-folk were not acclimated to the craze that was a firefight, and for the pair to discharge their weapons, they would loose a bit of lead into the innocents—maybe even into him! Nevin had already faced a deathclaw and had his life spared, he was not about to lose it to friendly fire. He snatched the man by his lapel, reaching around his shoulder to get a got hold in, and had drawn his pistol quickly from the holster at his hip. He pressed the barrel right into the back of the gentleman's neck, twisting it a little bit to really get the point across. The hammer was cocked with a disturbing clicking noise, and he wore his best ‘gotcha’ smirk. “Whoa there, friend,” he said, in a fake, tepid western drawl, “don’t you think that’s quite enough?”

Cassius stretched for the bag again, but he couldn't gain a good foothold with his legs splayed out the way they were. The bag inched a little farther from his fingertips. Then the woman who had been sitting next to him vaulted over as well, landing cleanly on her feet. She even brought his pack down with her, sliding it across the floor towards him. He wrenched free of the bartender, using the weight of the pack to drag himself forward and began rifling through the contents, stripping layers of animal hide from his gun. Already there were gunshots ringing in the enclosed space and the bartender scrambled to get away. Glass shattered overhead, sending shards bouncing off himself the the woman. Then, just as suddenly as the gunfire started, it stopped dead. There were sounds of a slight scuffle and the cocking of more than a few guns as the bar patrons slowly began to react to the gunfight. Cassius tossed the last scrap of wrapping to the floor and, gripping his rifle, he peered over the bar top. The man was still standing in the middle of the room, but now he had a pistol pressed firmly into his jaw. The smaller man was behind the brute, but the size difference doesn't matter with told steel at your throat. The last thing Cassius needed was to draw attention to himself. Ronnie was out there somewhere and Cassius still needed someone to do the talking for him. Now that his client's thug was taken care of he might as well try to sneak out and go look for the boy. He crawled over to the bartender who was crouched at the far end, rummaging around for a gun most likely. "There a back way out?" Cassius took his time with the words, slurring them out the side of his mouth as coherently as he could manage. To emphasize the point he shoved the business end of his rifle towards the back rooms.

Daring to sneak a peek, she was surprised to find the kid had the barrel of his pistol planted firmly against the shooter’s neck. Several other bar patrons had their weapons drawn too, and the last thing Gladys wanted was to be accused of somehow being involved in this bar fight. Her and the mayor weren’t exactly on the best of terms. Alright, time to hightail it, she thought, because Diamond City security was likely already on their way. The bartender, still slightly stunned from the furor, just nodded blankly at both Gladys and the other guy, “Uh, yeah, there’s an unmarked door over by the jukebox…It’ll take you to a back alley.” Without further prompting, Gladys stood and motioned towards the kid, who still had his gun on the shooter. For his part, he was completely silent, but Gladys could tell he was afraid to get his head blown off. “C’mon, leave him, lets get out of here before we get caught in a compromising position. I don’t know about you, but I don’t really feel like spending the night in jail,” she called to him before pulling the bandana back up over her face. She planned to follow face-wound guy, because hell, what was that all about? Now she was just plain curious.

He did not want to have to worry about getting shot as he fled away, chasing two total strangers into the oblivion of the Commonwealth. He let the creep, stunned and clearly uncomfortable, try to shake off the feeling of a good wallop as he turned toward the three. Whenever they were ready, he’d be right on their tails.

He threw his pack over one shoulder and stumbled towards the jukebox, shouldering onlookers around as he jostled through the small crowd. The girl and the kid seemed pretty familiar with each other, that or people talked to strangers a lot more often than Cassius thought. He raised a heavy boot and battered at the door until it caved outwards into an alley along the side of the dugout. The rooftops were his best bet at moving freely, he had no idea how many people might be out there looking for him. He turned to the others, putting his hands together and then bringing them apart in different directions. "Split up?" He winced as the mashed words slid from his mouth. He stepped out into the alley to make room for the others and closed the door behind them, grabbing a heavy crate of tatoes and dragging it over to bar the door. The only way these guys would know to come looking for him would be if Ronnie had blabbed about Cassius after the deal fell through. The only way he was going to find Ronnie was if he found the client and the only was he was going to find the client was if he talked to the Diamond City Guard at the jail. All this over a fucking molerat contract.

"Woah, woah. Wait a second. Who are you and what was that all about back there? You got like, some hit out for you or something? A bounty on your head?"-- had the kid followed them outside, she would gesture between herself and him: "Don't tell me we're gonna be associated with you now, because I have enough people trying to kill me as is."

He could not help but think that the older man has his panties wadded too far up his ass, and that the woman was too easily mixed into the emotional portion of things. He also was caught in the fantasy of if their roles had been switched in the firefight—what if he were in the woman’s position, and she were in his: ‘hey, watch out, old lady’, he would have said, and the tables would have been turned. He savoured the imaginary feeling of revenge and victory, and stopped to join in their whirlwind of adventure. “Oh, so you don’t know him,” he said quietly, mostly to himself. “Also yeah, you don’t get to just run off, pal,” Nellis said, “we’re not ‘splitting up’ so you can saddle us with some bullshit. First, you’re gonna tell us what’s going on, then we’ll look at our options.” Nellis had holstered his weapon, switching the hammer back into a friendlier position, but his hand never left his hip.

He'd seen what the kid was capable with the gun and he didn't like his odds with a three foot rifle in such a tight alley. He simply shrugged and began heaving himself over the lip of a low roof, clambering over more crates to get a better grip. Guess they're coming along for the ride. The rooftops of Diamond City were more manageable than the streets for Cassius. He never had to talk to anyone while he was up here. That and it reminded him of the wasteland, all sloping hills and steep inclines. He tossed his pack across a gap in the roof and then leaped over himself. The other two were keeping up alright, but they had probably figured out where they were headed by now. The jail was just over the next rooftop.
